Nashville is a city of diverse and stunning architecture. The care that goes into the construction of homes here is evident in every detail, from the grand estates to the tiny cottages. This section will briefly describe the evolution of the city’s architecture, and what makes Nashville’s design so unique.

The earliest settlers in this area came from the southern states and brought with them their love of traditional southern architecture, which was heavily influenced by Spanish, French, and English styles. Elegant mansions were built all over town as Nashville grew in stature as a mercantile center. These large homes featured big porches and plenty of balconies for viewing downtown Nashville from a distance or enjoying views of the river.

The middle-class citizens who arrived during the second half of the 19th century had less money to spend on extravagant homes, so they turned to simple designs that were cheaper to build but still offered plenty of light and air. Neoclassical designs such as Greek Revival started to take hold here in our new city.

These two styles blended together in many homes throughout the early 20th century to create lovely American Craftsman style architecture that featured details like wide eaves, front porches, and tall windows that let in lots of natural light.
